I write this blog post in memory of my sweet Jake.
Until We Meet Again, Jake
July 18, 2026.
That was the day our sweet orange tabby, Jake, crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
I never imagined how much it would hurt to say goodbye to a cat. People who have never loved a pet may not understand, but those who have know exactly what I mean. They aren’t “just animals.” They become family. They become part of your everyday life, your routines, your memories, and your heart. And when they’re gone, there is a silence that wasn’t there before.
A Little Hole in My Heart
It’s been hard waking up every morning. For years, Jake was the first face I’d look for in the kitchen. I’d wait to hear his little meow as he greeted me like he always did. I miss looking into his beautiful green eyes. I miss his soft orange tabby fur. I miss the way he’d curl up beside me for naps, the cuddles we’d share, and the tiny kisses he’d give me. The house feels different now. Quieter. There’s a little hole in my heart that only he could fill.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
That verse has brought me comfort because grief doesn’t just happen when we lose people. God sees every broken heart, even when it’s grieving the loss of a beloved pet.
Jake’s Story
Before Jake became my cat, he was first my husband’s cat. Around 2010, my husband met Jake when he was already a full grown cat, not a tiny kitten. Even then, they formed a special bond. Years later, in 2019, James officially adopted him, and that’s when Jake truly became part of our family’s story. I always loved that about Jake. He wasn’t raised from a kitten, yet he gave his whole heart to the people who loved him. Over the years, he became so much more than a pet. He became family, and he filled our home with unconditional love.
Watching Him Grow Tired
One of the hardest parts wasn’t just losing Jake. It was watching him slowly fade. In December 2025, he had a vet check-up and weighed 10 pounds. When I first met him in 2020, he was healthy, chunky, and full of life. He was probably 15 to 20 pounds at the time, super fat and full of life. Seeing him slowly decline until he weighed only 6 pounds by July 2026 absolutely broke my heart. Every pound he lost felt like a piece of him slipping away. I kept hoping. Praying. Believing maybe he’d bounce back. But deep down, I knew. My husband knew too. Jake was tired. As much as we wanted more time with him, we couldn’t ignore that he was hurting. Real love sometimes means letting go. Not because you want to, but because you love them enough to put their comfort before your own.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)
That verse has never been easy to accept, but it’s true. Even goodbye has its season.
The Goodbye I Didn’t Want
The week before Jake passed, something happened I’ll never forget. One evening, on the couch in the family living room he climbed into my arms, and we just held each other. It wasn’t an ordinary cuddle. It felt different. Looking back now, I truly believe it was his way of telling me goodbye. It was as if he was saying, “Mom… I’m tired.” I didn’t want to believe it. I wanted one more year. One more month. One more week. One more cuddle. But somehow, I knew. And I think he knew I knew.
His Last Breath
July 18, 2026, was the hardest day I’ve ever experienced. My husband and I stayed with Jake until the very end. We held him. We loved him. We thanked him. We whispered how much he meant to us. Then came the moment I wish never had to happen. I watched my sweet boy take his last breath. I cried harder than I ever imagined I could. I choked on my tears. My heart shattered. Part of me wanted time to stop. I didn’t want to let him go. But I also didn’t want him to hurt anymore. Love is strange that way. Sometimes loving someone means carrying the pain so they don’t have to anymore.
Avery Knew
The week Jake passed away, I noticed something that made my heart ache even more. Avery kept looking for him. Animals grieve too. She knew someone was missing. She knew her friend wasn’t there anymore. Watching her search the house reminded me how much Jake meant to all of us. He wasn’t just my cat. He was part of our family.
“The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” — Proverbs 12:10 (NIV)
God created animals with purpose, and He gave us the privilege of loving and caring for them. That bond is real.
Thank You, Jake
Thank you for every cuddle. For every nap. For every little meow. For every morning greeting. For every head bump. For every kiss. For making our house feel like home. Thank you for accepting me into your life. Thank you for loving our family so faithfully. Thank you for hanging on as long as you did. I know you stayed because you loved us. And when you couldn’t fight anymore, we loved you enough to let you rest. I will always be grateful for that gift.
I Still Look For You
Sometimes I still catch myself expecting to see you. I’ll walk into the kitchen and instinctively look down. I’ll hear a tiny sound and think it’s you. I’ll look at your favorite sleeping spots. For just a second, my heart forgets. Then it remembers all over again. Grief comes in waves. Some days I smile at the memories. Other days I cry because I miss you so much. Both are okay. Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means learning how to carry love and loss together.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3 (NIV)
I believe God is slowly healing my heart. Not by removing the pain, but by reminding me that love never truly leaves us.
They Really Are Family
If you’ve ever lost a pet, I want you to know something. Your grief is valid. Don’t let anyone tell you, “It was just a dog,” or “It was just a cat.” No. They were family. They celebrated your happiest moments. They comforted you through your hardest ones. They sat beside you when no one else did. They loved you unconditionally. That kind of love changes you forever. When you open your heart to an animal, you aren’t just bringing home a pet. You’re welcoming another family member. And when they leave, a piece of your heart goes with them.
Until We Meet Again
Jake, I miss you more than words could ever describe. Life isn’t the same without you. I still think about you every single day. I know someday the tears won’t come as often. I know eventually I’ll smile more than I’ll cry. But you’ll always be on my mind. You’ll always be part of my story. Part of our family. And while I wish I could hold you one more time, I find peace knowing you’re no longer hurting. I truly believe I’ll see you again someday.
Until then, run free, my sweet boy. Find the warmest sunbeams. Take the longest naps. And know that you were deeply loved every single day of your life.
I love you, Jake. Always have. Always will.
A Prayer for Anyone Grieving a Beloved Pet
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of animals and the unconditional love they bring into our lives. Thank You for every memory, every cuddle, every laugh, and every quiet moment shared with those we call family.
For those grieving today, wrap them in Your peace. When the house feels too quiet and their hearts feel heavy, remind them that You are near to the brokenhearted. Bring comfort where there is sorrow, healing where there is pain, and hope where there is sadness.
Thank You for the love we were blessed to experience. Help us treasure those memories and carry them with gratitude instead of only tears.
Until the day we are reunited in Your perfect presence, help us trust You with every goodbye.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
